Earlier this week I shared a photo on social media about the power of words and using our words carefully. After the post, I really felt the need to elaborate on this topic and share it on my blog. We’ve all had moments in our life where we’ve let our words fly out of mouth without regards to how they will affect others around us. I’ve said some pretty messed up things in my short lifetime, some of which I wish I could take back, but the truth is that our words can never be taken back. I shared the photo below in my post this week and it really hit home.
Our words are much more powerful than we may think. It’s why God tell us to open up our mouth and use our words to declare things over our life. Matthew 12:36-37 says, “I promise you on the day of judgement, everyone will have to account for every careless word they have spoken. On that day they will be told they are either innocent or guilty because of the things they have said.” Your words have great power but it is important that you use the power for good and not evil. Not to mention you will have to give an account one day of everything you say. I don’t know about you but I do not want to be found guilty by God on the day of judgement. As I spent time in prayer this week this thought came to mind.
So many non-believers look at the church world and run away because we don’t practice what we preach. We preach the importance of speaking words of life, prophesying over our future, or being encouragers to the lost but then we turn around and gossip behind others backs, get into heated arguments and say things we regret, talk negatively about ourselves, or use foul or abusive language on a daily basis. As believers our words should uplift ourselves and others. Once your words leave your mouth they can’t be taken back.
Ephesians 4:29 says “don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be encouragement to those who hear them.” God commands us to use our words wisely. Cursing, gossiping, negative words, and abusive language should not be a part of your daily vocabulary. It breaks my heart when I see believers, young and old, encouraging, prophesying, and speaking life one minute, and the next minute they are using foul language or posting video promoting foul and abusive language on social media, talking negatively about their lives, gossiping all around town, or getting into heated arguments with everyone they know. You can’t be a great witness to the lost when your words are so twisted. Being a Christian is not an excuse to be a work in progress in the same area of your life for your entire life. Being double-minded takes all your credibility away and makes you an ineffective Christian. Matthew 5:16 says, “Make your light shine, so others will see the good you do and will praise your Father in heaven.” They key word in that verse is GOOD. Doing good includes watching your words.
Don’t compromise your witness forever with the words you say today. You can start today by changing your words which in turn will begin to change your life. I challenge you to begin praying Psalms 19:14 over your life which says, “Let my words and my thoughts be pleasing to you, Lord, because you are my mighty rock and my protector.” I’m here to tell you that there is good news. God is a forgiving God and will forgive you if you are truly sincere about changing your ways. Ask God for forgiveness for the bad words you’ve spoken and begin to change them. Day by day make a conscious effort, with God’s help, to use the right words and watch your life begin to transform.
